Fergus, Ont – The boys in blue and white just keep finding a way to win, and staff is quite okay with that.
“No doubt, it has been a busy month for us with 9 games, but the team keeps showing up, and putting in the work, and we are getting the results we hoped for” Alternate Governor Ryan Duck said. “Your looking to get points every night, and we have wins in 5 of the 7 games so far this month, so it is a testament to our coaches, our management and players for the effort they are putting in on top of work and school commitments”
The Whalers got the month rolling with a battle with the Mitchell Hawks on October 4th. Fergus was dominant in the 3-0 win, as Bradley Boville picked up the win against his former team. The following day, the team faced a hot Mount Forest Patriots club who was eager to even the season series. The game was intense, with Fergus jumping to an early lead, which they would sustain for most of the game, before a late push from the Pats, tying the game up with under a minute – very similar to our first match up dramatics – and the arena went nuts. A couple of minutes of overtime was all that was needed for defenceman JJ Lavigne to find the back of the net, and secure the 2 points. The Whalers finished the first weekend of the month with a crushing win over the Wingham Ironmen at home, 6-1.
Thanksgiving weekend saw the team take its annual hotel weekend bonding trip to beautiful Kincardine. The Whalers started off the holiday weekend in Walkerton, where they played a hard fought game against the Caps. Luck was not on the teams side, and the boys fell 4-3. With no time to sulk, the boys immediately turned their sites to the Bulldogs the next day, winning the matinee battle 4-2. The team would like to thank the Sure Stay Kincardine for their hospitality, and to Mia Mamma’s Eatery for the excellent meal back at the hotel.
After a few days off for turkey and family time, the team travelled to Hanover to face the Barons for the first time on the road. A slow start was all the Barons needed to capitalize on, scoring 4 goals in the first two periods. The Whalers came out swinging in the 3rd, scoring three goals in quick succession to bring the game within one, but thats ultimately where the scoring would end. The Barons took the game 4-3, and leapfrogged the Whalers into first place in the Pollock Divison.
This past Sunday, the Whalers returned home after 3 on the road, and treated fans to a great game, going on to score seven unanswered goals against the Goderich Flyers to get back into the win column. The team was led by Tyler Ewald, who had a four point night, and Bradley Boville, who shut the door all night on the surging Flyers!
The Whalers have 2 games this weekend to round out October’s schedule. This Friday, the team travels to the North Huron Wescast Community Centre to take on the Wingham Ironmen for the second time this season. The Whalers lead the season series 1-0. Puck drop is slated for 8:00pm – any young Whalers fans travelling to the game will be admitted free with a halloween costume and paying adult. Sunday, we return home to face the Kincardine Bulldogs for the 3rd time this season. The Bulldogs have had a tough start to the year, but are playing much better, and will look to test the Whalers. Game time is 3:00pm, and the Whalers will be hosting our annual Halloween Night. Get admitted to the game at no charge with a halloween costume, and there will be candy for the youngsters.
The Whalers currently sit 2nd in the Pollock Division, trailing the Hanover Barons by one point. Even more proudly, the team currently sits 5th out of the 63 team league standings. Don’t miss any of this weekends action, all games are now being live streamed on NBC SportsEngine Play.
