Fergus, Ontario – In exciting fashion, the Whalers captured 4/4 points this weekend in contests with Kincardine and Mount Forest.
The Whalers opened the weekend on Saturday night with a trip up to Kincardine. The Bulldogs came into the game with an 0-3 record, and were eager to get going, playing a physical game off the bat. After a scoreless first period, the scoring cracked open in the second period, Justin Ewald potted his first of 2 goals on the night. The game was tied going into the 3rd, and a second goal by Ewald, followed by a goal by 2nd year forward Boden Brimmell was all the Whalers needed to secure the win, and hold off a late push from the Bulldogs.
On Sunday, the Mount Forest Patriots made their first trip to the CW Sportsplex, in a night we honoured the 2024 Founders Cup Champion Elora Mohawks. It was a fast, back and fourth game, with over 350 fans in attendance. After going up 2-1, the Patriots clawed back, eventually taking the lead, 3-2 late in the 3rd period. With netminder, Bradley Boville, pulled for an extra attacker, Ty Anselmini brought the crowd to their feet, scoring a heroic goal with 4.8 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. New for the 24/25 season, the PJHL reverts to a 7-minute 3-on-3 overtime period before a shoot out if necessary. Fans were treated to nearly 7 full minutes of overtime before Ty himself finished the game off beating Pats goalie Marshall Nicholls low blocker side to secure the win!!
The Whalers are back in action this Saturday at 7:15pm when they take on the Mitchell Hawks at the Mitchell and District Arena. The team returns home on Sunday to face the Walkerton Capitals!!
